Dundee City Council
On behalf of Dundee City Council, we are responsible for maintaining the Dundee Historic Environment Record. This comprises an index to over 5,000 known archaeological sites, ranging from medieval burghs to textile mills, and from findspots of prehistoric tools to WWII pillboxes. Information on historic landscape, standing buildings and statutory designations is also held, as well as aerial photographs and many reports on archaeological fieldwork and building recording.
The index is held in a database developed by exeGesIS SDM Ltd called HBSMR (Historic Buildings, Sites & Monuments Records System). This is a customised Access database which provides links to a GIS (Geographic Information System) display which allows the illustration of the sites on a modern map base.
