Estate Survey
Programmes of landscape and building survey can be undertaken to evidence the condition and character of known cultural heritage sites. Non-specific survey can also be undertaken on a sample or whole landholding basis to identify previously unlocated sites.
Where sampling is undertaken this would be targeted based on either estate need or hazard to archaeology. For instance field walking arable ground after ploughing or examining eroding surfaces, especially stream and shore edge locations.
The character of information gathered would be suited to the requirements of purpose for which the data was gathered. Locational information can be gathered at a general scale (compass resection), for GIS use (Leica GS50) or for detailed CAD use (Leica TCR 307). This can be intergrated with other existing data sources, usually within a GIS system (ArcGIS), to create a valuable management tool.
